Whether or not Puerto Rico becomes the 51. State of the union is anyone's' guess, but if and when that happens it will mean that the Puerto Ricans themselves want statehood and a two-thirds majority of the Congress supports this. In addition, its application for statehood~ has to have the approval of every state's legislature.
             America's neighbors Getting back to the map, however, and having acknowledged that the US spans a continent and then some, we see that the country's only immediate neighbors to the east and west are fish: there is a 5000 kilometers span of salt water between the US and Europe, and on the Pacific side of the American continent there are some 8000 kilometers of ocean between the US and the Asian continent. This distance -this isolation from the "Old World" -has also played an important role in shaping American attitudes and policies.
