Good Will Hunting

             Good Will Hunting is a story of a young man's struggle to transcend his childhood, to discover his place in the world, and to achieve intimacy with others. The main character, Will, is a tough and gifted orphan from Boston's South Side who prefers to spend his days hanging out with his friends, drinking beer and fighting with rival gangs. He works as a janitor at MIT. But one day, when he completes a complex mathematical problem written on a blackboard at MIT as a test for advanced graduate students, he comes to the attention of mathematics professor Lambeau, who wants to save him from himself and direct him towards a career in higher math. He arranges for this, but the boy's emotional instability (and a court order) requires he attend therapy sessions. Will's feelings about himself, about a woman he courts, about his gift and his background are explored and developed through his interaction with the psychologist Sean McGuire whose background turns out to be similar.
             According to the main ideology of the conflict theory, Will's behavior is best understood in terms of tension and conflict between groups and individuals. First, Will's resistance to change his problematic lifestyle is based on class pride. He would be betraying his friends and the old neighborhood if he does it. Also, old psychic and childhood wounds stop him to change. Through days, he realizes that he doesn't have to live his life that way. Ideology, competition, conflict, change-producing strain and of course, his therapies with psychologist Sean McGuire are some of the factors that will cause Will's lifestyle change.
