When Ian Smith of the rightist Rhodesian Front became Rhodesia's president in 1964, he immediately began rallying for independence from Britain. Although he had no support from any foreign country or the whites in Zimbabwe, he created the Unilateral Declaration of Independence. This was ignored by mostly by the UN, declared illegal by the British, and Rhodesia was not recognised as an independent country by any other nation.
