Colin Powell

             Colin Powell is a great man. He played an important role in the Persian Gulf War. He even helped (former) President George Bush make decisions. We respect him for his intelligence and skill. The following paragraphs will be dedicated to his life.
             Colin Powell was born on April 5, 1937. His parents were both Jamaican immigrants. They came to America hoping for better opportunities. He had a sister named Marilyn. Colin did not earn the best grades in school. He later joined the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), which prepares students for military service. Colin loved ROTC. He soon became the leader of his unit and the second best cadet. At graduation, he held the rank of cadet colonel, which was the highest rank. After college, he was sent to Georgia for basic training. He soon realized that the blacks were treated differently from whites. He was very disappointed. Colin was later sent to Massachusetts where he met a girl, Alma Johnson. She worked as an audiologist. They were married on August 25, 1962.
             Powell soon was transferred to Vietnam to fight in the Vietnam War against North Vietnam. He was very excited. But, during the next day, he was very sad when a teammate of his died in a gun battle. Colin returned to Alabama in 1963. Five years later, Colin was sent back to Vietnam. He was worried. He now had three children. He did the best he could in the war.
             When the war was over, everyone came home. Many soldiers decided to quit. However, he stayed in the army. The army recognized his dedication and sent him back to school to earn a masters degree. He then spent a year working in the White House.
             In time, Colin Powell rose in ranks. In 1978, he became a brigadier general. In 1987, Ronald Regan asked him to be his national security assistant. He became the first black four star-general. In 1989, Colin became the chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff. During the Persian Gul
