These tensions take place before the game; however conflicts also arise throughout the game itself. The greatest of these conflicts occurs while Danny is at-bat and Rueven is pitching. Danny hits the ball directly at Rueven's face, destroying his glasses. After the game Rueven must go to the hospital because his eye is badly marred. It turns out that there is a piece of glass in his eye. In order to remove the glass, Rueven will have to undergo surgery that if not successful, could leave him blind in the eye. This causes Reuven to have horrible feelings of hate towards Danny. However, Danny tries to reconcile with Reuven while visiting him at the hospital. After a great deal of persistence, Danny is able to convince Rueven that he is truly sorry for what he has done and the two become friends.
             Soon, Danny and Rueven become accustomed to each others way of life. For example, Reuven walks over to Danny's home every Shabbat afternoon to study Talmund. Also, they begin to meet each other in the library where Rueven's father works. Although they have very different interests, Danny and Rueven soon become inseparable. However, college becomes a challenge for their friendship. Even though they attend the same college, they have less time for leisure. Also, Zionism also becomes a factor that separates them, because their fathers both have different feelings toward it. Eventually, Reb Saunders forbids Danny to see Reuven any longer. For a long time after this decision, Reuven has a profound hatred for Reb Saunders, and even decides that Danny is no go
