Montressor's Obsessive Revenge

             Edgar Allan Poe is noted for two types of short stories, the tales of terror and the tales of reason. Poe's characterization of Montresor, the main character of his short story "The Cask of Amontillado," is a perfect example of the gothic tales that brought him recognition. Poe paints Montresor as a calculated and deliberate killer with little or no feelings of guilt.
             The story begins with Montresor dictating the events of 50 years prior to an undisclosed individual. Montresor feels as though the antagonist, Fortunato, has wronged him on numerous occasions. Although these injuries are not stated, Montresor is adamant that vengeance is necessary. Montresor states: "I must not only punish, but punish with impunity." (Poe 1188) This quote shows that not only does Montresor feel strongly about the actions that must be taken, but also demonstrates the attitude that these actions are warranted. Montresor, like any other man, is consumed by the desire to avenge his foe.
             As Poe describes the Montresor family estate and namesake, the reader gets a peek into the possible establishment of the apparently one-sided feud. Montresor states that his family was once a "great and numerous family" whose motto is "No one wounds me with impunity" (Poe 1190). The fact that the family was once great evokes the idea of jealousy and inferiority that Montresor feels towards Fortunato. The estate is described as empty, with only Montresor and the maids and attendants as inhabitants. As the only member of the family in the estate, one can sense the loneliness and solitude Montresor experiences.
