            American Foreign Policy
            
             During World War One and Two the American foreign policy has changed. It went from isolation to internationalism. Why? In my opinion it has different reasons.
             One reason why the United States isolated itself was because they had, and have, no proximity to other great powers and could so feel secure. Another reason was that the balance of power on the European continent was maintained by Britain which also was democratic. The first time the United States was forced to end its isolation was after Germany's unification and its rapid industrialization which was the relative decline of British power. The second time the United States ended their isolation was in 1940 after they faced the possibility of Britain's defeat and the control of Eurasia by Germany, Italy, and Japan, which were all antidemocratic states. The USA helped Britain to prevent this. The security of a democratic America was interwoven with the survival of other democracies, especially France and Britain. In my opinion the USA were not only worried about the security of a democratic America, they were more interested in their economic survival. Would antidemocratic states reign Eurasia and Europe, the USA would have lost a huge customer for their products.
             President Woodrow Wilson said in his speech on April 2 that he wants to fight "for the ultimate peace of the world and for the liberation of its peoples, for the right of nations, and the privilege of men everywhere to choose their way of life". I think this was a great speech, yet I have problems to believe that he only wants to fight for those reasons a war. The black Americans were not free at this time and could not choose their way of life, but he wanted to rescue other countries.
