The Role of Adults in Romeo and Juliet

             In this essay, I will be discussing to what extent the adults, Friar Lawrence, Nurse, and Juliet's parents, Capulet and Lady Capulet should be held accountable for their lack of judgment which lead to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are often referred to as victims of fate or "star crossed lovers." The main problem for Romeo and Juliet is that they come from families that are constantly feuding with each other. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet.
             One lady, who was close to the Capulets' but even closer to Juliet, was Juliet's Nurse. She had formed a special relationship with Juliet. She had become the main adult in Juliet's life, because she had been there since Juliet was a baby. She would have spent more time with Juliet than her mother would have, in those times.
             The Nurse was aware of Romeo and Juliet's relationship. She makes sure that Juliet's Parents do not find out. The Nurse gets herself into a difficult situation. As she has a special relationship with Juliet, she does not want to spoil the relationship, by telling Juliet's Parents. At the same time she does not want to see Juliet unhappy. When she first hears about their relationship, her reaction is "The only son of your great enemy". From this quote it seems as if she cannot believe it. She may on the other hand, be trying to make Juliet realise what she is doing is wrong, and will not stay a secret for long.
             After the Nurse is aware that Romeo and Juliet are married she behaves superficially. "I think it best you married with county. O, he's a lovely gentleman". In some ways it's difficult to know what the Nurse will achieve by saying things like this, and knowing that Romeo and Juliet are already married. She may be trying to keep it a secret, because if the Capulet's find out that the Nurse knew and did not say anything, she would lose her job. She tries to protect and stand up for Juliet, until she is taken down by Capul...
