Thomas Hardy chooses to switch your attention in The Withered Arm, by not concentrating on one characters loneliness, but on four, this is of the main characters of Rhoda, Gertrude, the boy and Farmer Lodge. The first three chapters are mainly focused on Rhoda and you recognize how emotionally isolated she is, when the others chat to each other but as the paragraphs continue she doesn't join in, you see how she is different and lonely from the rest He hadn't spoke to Rhoda Brook for years. Physical loneliness is also developed on Rhoda brook. As to make the wedding ring it wore glitter in Rhodas eyes, in the novel by Hardy shows how she looks up to others as she is unhappy with herself and alone. The end of the story concludes Rhoda's loneliness when still no one communicates with her even after the recent death of the son.
             When describing where Rhoda and her boy live he sets a scene of a depressing, lonely landscape a lonely spot with a dark like area He uses this image of a face to give the quality of a person to their home.
             You start to recognize how the boy himself is the cause of his own problems and it was not just everybody else's communication lack but also his own as well, He would speak to nobody.
             The boy has no affection given to him, but is only used to run errands. She takes no notice of him, like his father. The relationship with Gertrude and farmer lodge starts to go downhill when the disfigurement of her arm appears he doesn't want her to leave the house and he is very curious to find out how here arm has got to become like this.
