Hilltop Case Study

             This past summer I worked at a bank in Casper Wyoming (Hilltop National Bank). My job title was financial utility clerk, which basically meant I worked in every part of the bank, depending on who needed help the most that day. The two departments I worked in most were commercial lending and the Human Resources department, although I spent time in real estate, trust, and personal banking. The one thing that really caught my attention was the different attitudes employees had in each department. Each of the departments was spread up enough that each had its own set of different guidelines as well as different supervisors. When reading about our assignment I thought it would be interesting to see what could have possibly accounted for the difference. I feel that I got to know each department well enough that I could relate it to some of the things that we are learning this semester.
             It was amazing to me that every department I went into had a complete different outlook on their job. When I worked in the human resources department everyone seemed to have a good attitude and we usually left the job around 6:00 instead of the normal 5:00 shift. When I worked in commercial lending everyone sprinted out the door at exactly 5:00. I know this because I was reminded each day around 4:55 that I could start putting my things up. It wasn't till we were assigned this project did I become increasingly interested in why this could be.
             I decided to start my case study by studying what are text books had to say, as well as exploring different articles on the subject matter.
             In Michael Maccoby's, "Creating a Learning Culture" he points out many important ideas on the subject. In this article Michael points out a few techniques that he feels are the essential elements in creating a healthy working environment for employees.
