When I was reading the Ethics poem in my Lit. book in made me think. It starts off by stating the question. If there was a fire in a museum and you hade to pick between a rare expensive original painting and an elderly woman who has only a couple of years left in here which one would you save. When you ask me that question my first answer was the painting because the woman is old and about to go. Then I got to thinking about what I have said in the class room.
That made me feel, awful that I would save a material item over a human life form. This how America's youth mentality is toward the elderly. We feel that "old people" are worthless after a period of time. We also are very materialistic, now I do not know why. I seem like people are judge by what they ride in or what kind of job they have. Which is wrong but, it is the American way.
Don't get me wrong almost all old folks have the bad impression of all youth. They think all youth are lazy, worthless, and do all the drugs under the sun. Really that is just a small portion of Generation Y. We less caring about what goes on all we want are the television or the Playstation 2. It is different for the elderly to get use to us as we can get use to them but we all are going to be here so we minds well learn to live with each other.
Back to the poem, it made wonder what if the tables were turned and I was old. I know I would want someone to save me instead of a painting. I wonder how I would feel about the youth when I am the elderly. Will I think they are worthless and lazy? Will I say all the things my dad says to me about his youth like I was cool back in the day. Will I think they are crazy for acting the way I do now? Only time will tell if the table will get turned.
