Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) , Is also known as mad cow disease. This disease started when Peter Stent noticed one of his cows shedding weight, losing its balance and acting skittish. Thinking nothing of it, he slaughtered the cow and used it as feed for the other cows not knowing it was infected with prions which cause Mad Cow disease. Prions are normal protein which are folded into abnormal shapes causing many diseases. Because of Peter Stents unawareness, Mad Cow disease spread to other cows causing death. Only to add to this growing problem, he used those cows as feed as well.
Now that we know the cause and origin, what about the worry involved in this. Scientists are worried that this disease may come from Europe (where Peter Stents cows recieved this disease) and the other countries in which it spread to other cows ,zoo monkeys and humans, to theU.S.200,000 cattle have died and 94 human lives have been claimed.
Now here is where the worry sets in. First it invades our food supply(example: 1988 ban from British feed) and now our lives! Our immpressions are that this is not good. The first case of human disease was in 1992 when Allison Williams of Caernarfon, in north Wales suffered the same symptoms of the cows ,when she lost use of her tongue and became paranoid she was near the end . Finally, she went into a coma and died five days later.
This proved that this disease is a real problem . So scientists are still trying to stop this disease by finding a cure for humans and animals. Until we can be sure its safe , if you have low tolerance you should not eat hamburger, or other cow products, if you don't you are all set. For now at least!!!
