inside ring of Bluestones is two horseshoe shaped groups of stones" (20). The Altar stone and the Bluestones were from Wales, near the coast of the Irish Sea. This is the shortest route to southern Ireland where the stones were located. One is inside the other, and both face northeast toward the entrance of the avenue. The first horseshoe is the Sarsen Stone. It is twenty to twenty-five feet tall capped with lintel called "Trilithons." The shape of Trilithons looked like gallows used in medieval times. "The inside horseshoe from another stone made of Bluestones" (20). It is believed that the horseshoes were built at different times. At the center of horseshoes' curve is the Altar Stone, the heart of Stonehenge. Each of the major parts are the Earth Rings and the Rings of Stones. At various times Stonehenge was called Stanheng or Stanhenge. "Stan" in Old English means stone. "Henge" in Old English means to hang. "Because lintels seem to 'hang' in the air from supporting Sarsens, they were called place of the 'Hanging Stones' or Stonehenge" (21).
             Although the Romans possessed skill and knowledge they did not enter England until sixty A. D. "The Druids were not skilled in architecture, did not know mathematics, and could not read or sculpt" (41). The main reason for this is that Stonehenge was built in the fifteen hundreds B.C. This was long before the Druids came to Britain. However, scholars do believe that the Druids did worship there. "The temple, dedicated to the worship of the sun horseshoe, opened northeast toward the summer solstice sunrise" (54). The alignment of the Altar Stone, Heel Stone, and the Avenue all point toward the rising midsummer sun, which indicated a place of worship.
