Laws governing drivers whose blood alcohol level is over the acceptable limit that have infected bodily injury to an innocent person or persons or caused death should be required to serve a set number of years in prison in addition to mandatory community service. Too many teenagers today are involved in accidents due to alcohol. This needs to be taken more seriously; therefore, penalties should be more strict for the first time offenders. In order to decrease the amount of second and third time offenders, many out reach programs are designed to help those who have been in situations with a drunk driver, or who have lost a loved one due to a drunk driving accident. Many of these organizations are designed to make people aware of what they can do to help this increasing problem.
             Nation wide too many teenagers are involved in automobile accidents every year.
             In 1996, 5,805 teenagers died in the United States from motor vehicle crash injuries.... A number of factors have been found to contribute to the high incidence of accidents involving younger drivers, including driver error; speeding; failure to use seat belts; high occupancy vehicles; and alcohol use (Jasper 27).
             "Statistically, approximately eight young people a day die in alcohol-related crashes"(Jasper 27). In less than one year our whole entire student body would be dead. "According to the NHTSA, somebody dies in a alcohol-related crash every thirty minutes"(Jasper 1). Also reported from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration studies have shown that 25 and 40 percent of people arrested for drunk driving have a previous conviction and people with a previous conviction are 4.1 times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident than the general population.
