Her firm stand against the death penalty makes her an admirable character because she stands strong to her beliefs, and does not stray from them despite the public pressure. The reader is able to trust strong and confident woman, who is unafraid to take a stand against issues which concern her. I think as the reader I was stuck by Sister Helen's ability to accept others. This quality was especially apparent when Sister Helen went to visit prisoners on death row; she did not make the outright assumption that the prisoner she was advising was guilty. She fears the prisoners slightly, "I look down at the name in horror. Do I really want to know such a man?"(52) but she tries to help despite her fears.
