I went to several AA meetings around Washington, DC and found that there are a few simple things that may seem difficult, but will make considerable changes to your behavior regarding drugs and alcohol.
First, go to meetings. Second, get a sponsor. Third, call your sponsor. Repeat this as many times as necessary(for most this is a life-time commitment.)
Be honest, open-minding and willing from the very start. Leave no stone unturned. We all have reservations about making changes. Consider yourself as a new job applicant and your life as a job. Look back honestly about how you've performed and figure out where you want to go. Be certain that you read what AA offers. You may be surprised to find out that you may want to hold onto your life style (which most surely includes lying, cheating and stealing your way through difficult situations) and not attain the AA way of life. It is a difficult pill to swallow, one that shouldn't be swalled without water or food in your stomach.
From here though if your start is honest and you can commit yourself to your meetings and your sponsor in the same way you did your drug of choice and your dealer, you're well on your way. What is meant by this is that if you walked through the cold or rain or both to get to the bar or your dealer, get your butt to the meetings on time. If you called your dealer or visited a bar every day, call your sponsor and get your butt to a meeting every day.
Stick with it. Few fail who are capable of being honest with themselves.
