Characters in Act 1 of Death of a Salesman

             In Act 1 of Arthur Miller's play, 'Death of a Salesman' we learn a lot about the characters in the play by what they say, how they act and what they do. We are introduced to the Loman Family. They seem like the very average and typical American Family, with the husband making all the money, the caring and loving wife who takes care of the house, and the well achieving children with goals and dreams.
             The first and main character of the story is Willy Loman who is the father of the family. From the first conversation with Linda, we can tell that Willy has a quite a temper, we know this because "Willy (with casual irritation): I said nothing happened. Didn't you hear me?'". Willy lives in a world of illusion and idealism, as he thinks that he's very well liked and accepted by society, when in reality, he isn't. As Willy has grown older, he has trouble distinguishing between illusion and reality, and is often lost in flashbacks where much of the story is told. We know this because, suddenly in the middle of a conversation with Linda, he'll start day dreaming about the past "But it's so beautiful up there, Linda, the trees are so thick, and the sun is warm." Miller achieves in showing Willy as a disillusioned character by the way he always makes him go from the present to the past by his use of stage directions (when trying to show past, Willy will walk through a wall in their house)
             The second character is Linda Loman, who's the very caring and understanding wife of the house. She's very loving towards Willy, even though he has a short temper and snaps at her. We know this because she says "Take an aspirin. Should I get you an aspirin? It'll soothe you." She realizes that Willy is just an ordinary man, but she doesn't blame him for it. If anything, she loves him more because of it. Linda always makes excuses...
