Importance of Symbolism in The Lord of the Flies
             Symbolism plays a very important role in the novel The Lord of the Flies. In this novel by William Golding, the symbols used help explain the actions of the characters, and they help explain the true intentions of the deeper story. Each symbol has its own way of aiding the reader move along through the story.
             One of the main symbols that help explain the actions made by a certain character is Piggy's glasses. The glasses worn by Piggy are a symbol of intelligence and they also represent a sense of hope for the boys. The fact that Piggy is the one chosen to wear the glasses explains many things that Piggy did. Piggy was always by Ralph's side giving him good advice, and, "we must keep a signal fire..." was often repeated throughout the novel. Another symbol from the story is the spear that was sharpened at both ends. Jack was the main one involved when both of the spears were created. This helps add to the description of Jack and the actions taken by Jack.
             The symbols in the story also help make the story as interesting as it is. Without the symbols, the reader is just left with boys stuck on an island. The conch shell that was discovered by Piggy played an important role in creating a better story. The shell represented a sense of order between the boys. It showed how the boys tried to set up an ordered society, and that they actually tried to handle their situation with some sense. When the shell was broken, it diminished all hope of banding all of the boys together. Without the conch shell, the reader only knows that the boys are running around on an island with no sense, or control.
             The role of symbolism in this novel is the most important of any of item. Without the symbols used by William Golding, the story is made into a simpler and less interesting fairy tale.
