What is war? War is the aggressive response to conflict by a nation or group in an attempt to gain power over a people or situation. War is killing; it is planned death for a cause not worth the outcome. War is hidden behind government; they use language that avoids the harsh reality of battle, and to cover up their mistakes. People do not understand the seriousness of death, somewhere along the line the tragic reality of war is blurred and lost.
             In the movie, All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul and his classmates are considered typical of the soldiers of any nationality. They are boys straight out of college doing what they were asked to do, defend their country. And like every man or boy about to enter war, they didn't know what they were getting into. They didn't realize the effects that war can take on a man. They were asked to defend their country and had a sense or feeling of need to protect their nation and their freedom. This is why every man goes to war.
             War is technically the decision of the nation's ruler, but the people of that nation can influence the decision. Treating people as if they were not human, such as under communism, or believing that some people are superior to others, lead to war. These causes anger people of other nations as well as activist groups, which consequently anger the government or ruler of that nation. But on the other hand sometimes the government is the only group of people that become angry, such as in Vietnam. Therefore the decision to go to war is left up to the government or the nation's ruler. No matter what the cause of the war is, there will always be soldiers to fight for that cause.
             In today's face of war there are many fears among young soldiers. For example, fear of death, fear of leaving their family and friends, and fear of killing people. But people are able to over come or accept these fears because war change
