Murphy, C., Simkins, M., and Helowicz, R. (1999). Diabetes exercise project. Journal of
             Human Nutrition and Dietetics, 12 (Suppl.1), 79-90.
This article was designed as a project to see whether or not exercise will improve diabetes control, prevent disease, decrease medication use, and prevent the onset of diabetes in genetically predisposed individuals. On some aspects the project proved to be evident, for example, exercise will improve diabetes control, prevent disease, decrease medication use and prevent the onset of diabetes, but the limitations to these are that one must be consistent, motivated and be willing to make exercise a lifetime commitment. Diet, also a key factor, which the article failed to discuss, must come into play and must also be discussed in detail.
The article is very thorough in discussing the methods, results and conclusions. The authors used questionnaires, group discussions and data collection from the members of the project. At the end of the article, the authors comment on the group and group the results into data tables that provide a useful shortcut in evaluating the key points of the project, basically, what worked well and what did not. It also provides a self-evaluation that provides one with useful information and tips that can also be used to establish a diabetes exercise project in any town. It is intended for the adult audience and is not limited to medical personnel, however, it is recommended that one contact a physician before starting such a program.
It is important to remember that disease can be prevented through diet and exercise. This article was informative because anyone can read this article and gain an understanding of the many benefits of exercise. It is not limited to diabetics. It is a reliable study because it evaluates the person as a whole, mentally, physically and emotionally, but its limitations is that it is ultimately up to the person to remain motivated
