beneficial maximum efficiency could be achieved (Robbins 2001a). He felt that it would be detrimental for management to attempt to force a change in the organizational culture; however, by a process of education and designing systems that facilitated efficiency then maximum efficiency would eventually be achieved (Robbins 2001b).
The Gilbreths' and Frederick Taylors' concept of efficiency through standardization is evident in nearly every industry. From the automobile assembly lines to the bread bakeries, the benefits of standardization and the well designed production facilities allow manufactures to produce large quantities of reliable products in the most cost effective manner possible. It was through studying individual tasks and the time taken to perform the individual tasks that allowed the Gilbreths to find the best way to perform each task ("Frank and Lillian" n.d.a).
The Gilbreths conducted time and task studies to find the optimum way to perform a task. The Gilbreths coined the term "motion study". The Gilbreths used micro-motion study-to-study short cycled movements as well as inventing cyclographs and chrono-cycle graphs to observe rhythm and movements ("Frank and Lillian" n.d.b).
The Gilbreths would break a large task down into the smaller tasks until each task was broken down into its smallest possible task. They would observe and examine workers in the performance of these smaller tasks and attempt to determine the most efficient manner to perform the task. Through their studies the Gilbreths developed the laws of human motion and the principles of motion economy ("Frank and Lillian" n.d.c).
Frederick Taylor and the Gilbreths shared many of the same views and ideas; however the Gilbreths focused on the micro aspects of the production process.
Although Frederick Taylor did discuss the importance of standardization and optimum performance of tasks, he ...
