have all the power over a family. In that society, they think that they are always right about what ever they do. In this short story, the author presents to us that women should have some rights. When they don't have the rights, they will not favor men in any kind of ways. Instead, they will most likely be on the women' side. For example, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peter keeps the secret of the truth for Mrs. Wright is a thing that women probably do in that society.
             This story was written in 1917. At the time of this story, women had very limited rights. "Women's role or 'place' in society, their confinement and isolation, the psychic violence wrought against them, their power or powerlessness vis-a-vis men, are not concerns restricted to Glaspell's time and place"(Hedges 2).They worked hard with other women to gain some rights as time goes on. Women didn't have any voice in politics because they were not able to vote until 1920. "Historically, American women have been denied their civil rights in suffrage (they were unable to vote until a 1920 constitutional amendment)". (MS Encarta Encyclopedia) After the amendment, women start to get more opportunity to show what they can do. Women got lots of credits when the United States was in the World War II. As of 21st century, women have nearly the same rights as men. (Fenster)
             Women in this story are the important characters because they are the one that has no voice and power in the family. However, Susan Glaspell wants to show the reads how a woman can be when they don't have any rights. For example, Both Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peter know who kills Mr. Wright, but they hide the truth because they feel sorry for Mrs. Wright for the lack of freedom. They are also key characters because the author wants to point out that men should not overpower women all the time.
