Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

             Through his diction and style of writing, we as readers see J. Edwards' fierce attempt to inspire and to be heard. Edwards selective choice of words allows him to clearly, and strongly, express his point. Meanwhile, his style holds the readers' interest very close at hand. By the end of the work, one feels so passionate towards Edwards' words, and so supportive of his what seems to be strong leadership, one feels inclined to jump on the bandwagon along side those inferior, fearful, and respectful of God. Instilling freight and causing action among those facing damnation from God seems to be Edwards' intent.
             Edwards' diction aides in creating images that fuel the growing emotion of the work. One begins to experience the fear along with Edwards as he says, "There is the dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God; There is hell's wide gaping mouth open; And you have nothing to stand upon, nor anything to take hold of.: These words of the description allow the reader to picture desperate images of themselves falling uncontrollably into the pits of hell. Edwards; careful choice of words, through their vivid descriptions, set the foundation of a very powerful mood.
             The style of writing in Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God hints at the author's tone. Through this, one is exposed to the overall moods expelled from the piece. Edwards uses repetition in to stress importance. The phrases "Their foot shall slide in due time," and "Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction," are repetitious, presenting eventual destruction as a major theme in the work. Also, though the over occurrence of many words and phrases, as well as the input of exclamation points, one sees the authors tone as powerful and interactive.
