This novels theme is based mostly upon the "American Dream." Throughout the two chapters I read, I have learned a lot about how Gatsby has tried to accomplish this American dream.
             Gatsby tells his story of how he started out as a poor kid, born in a small town in North Dakota. In Gatsby's mind, the start of his American Dream started when he changed his name from Jay Gatz, to James Gatsby. He did this at age 17 hoping it would start him off in the right direction. He started his rise to fame while walking along the shores of Lake Superior. While walking up and down the lakes shoreline, he came upon a huge yacht. Being around the lake a lot, Gatsby told the man on the yacht that he could have sailing troubles. The man believed Gatsby, and liked the smarts that he had to offer. So Dan Cody took Gatsby under his wing.
             This was the beginning of his dream. Cody, and Gatsby became great friends. But because of his drinking problems, Cody died (hence Gatsby was not a big drinker). With the knowledge that Cody gave Gatsby, he was also supposed to get a portion of his riches. But when Cody died, a woman that also was on the yacht, named Ella Kay, took all the riches that were promised to Gatsby.
             This just inspired Gatsby to succeed. Gatsby learned from Cody and went on with his life. Gatsby then ran into his dream woman, she was named Daisy Fay. Because Gatsby was drafted for the war the two of them were split up for several years. This made it difficult to keep in touch, the relationship faltered, and daisy found love somewhere else. She married a rich man named Tom Buchanan. When Gatsby got back he still never forgot about Daisy. He had to find a way to win back this woman of his dreams.
