Over the 2002 summer, my ten year old cousin, Jackson, went sailing in Alaska.
While there he had a once in a lifetime experience, he saw a Orca. He went on
the sailing trip with his father Stuart, my uncle Richard and his wife Julie and
their daughter Angela. The boat was also piloted by a guy called Captain Jim.
When they arrived in Alaska they all went immediately to the dock
where the boat was. They all had time to kill before the boat was ready to set
sail. Jackson wanted to see the ocean, so he walked out toward the end of the
dock. The dock was about one hundred feet long, and sat in water about 20
feet deep. Jackson stood at the end of the dock facing the mainland, seeing if
the sailboat was ready to sail. All of a sudden he heard a low growling sound
coming from the waters direction. At first he just ignored it, then suddenly he
was sprayed with a cooling mist of salt water. Peering over the docks edge,
Jackson saw a little black eye staring up at him. Jackson was so shocked at his
discovery of this massive yet gentile creature, that he could not speak. The
whale was so close to the docks edge. That if Jackson stepped off, he would
land on the whales back. Jackson inched toward the docks edge till his toes
were hanging off. Then again came a spray of salt water, and the whale again
grumbled it's low voice. Jackson just stood there at the docks edge staring into
the whales little black eye, and hoping the moment would never end. Jackson's
father ran up to the end of the dock. Jackson's father did not know what the
whale would do next. So he grabbed Jackson from the edge of the dock, and
carried him back toward the sailboat. The sudden movement of Jackson and his
father, spooked the whale, which in turn began to swim away from the dock.
When the whale was about fifty feet from the dock, he jumped out of the
