All NATO countries have got liberal economies and share the same democratic values. 'Democracies are pacific because democratic norms and culture inhibit the leadership from taking actions leading to war. Democratic leaders hear from multiple voices that tend to restrain decision-makers and therefore lessen the chance of war' . Their liberal economy is less war-prone than other types of economies. A state with a liberal economy produces and exports products that it can produce more efficiently than other states. Production is oriented toward the international market and hence efficiency is increased and worldwide wealth maximized. War interrupts trade, blocks profit, and causes inflation. Thus, since all the NATO members have got liberal capitalist economies, they are more apt to avoid war and to promote peace with states with which they trade goods and services.
Since the end of the Cold War, the term security for NATO has been given a dual meaning: it no longer means only security against military or other armed attacks but includes also economic security in the sense that actions must be undertaken to either prevent any blockade in the process of trade and commerce that may arise from wars and conflicts or encourage other countries to integrate the international trading system through participation in the Western economic and financial institutions. NATO has continued to show a deep interest in European security by extending its blanket of security outwards from its borders.
