Why Boys Don't Play with Dolls

             In the twenty first century, there has been an increase in debates on "Why dads do not want their little boys to play with dolls?". Every talk show on the television in today's society emphasizes the father's strong dislike. There are numerous reasons why dads feel the way they do about this issue. I interviewed several dads and main reasons they were against boys playing with dolls were: (1) socially unacceptable; (2) confused gender role, and (3) could foster female characteristics.
             Today's society teaches children that the process of becoming gendered involves recognizing the differences between females and males (Birrell and Cole, 1990, Duncan, 1990). This process has a tendency to place emphasis on gender opposition which shape the ways children should physically express themselves. It also suggest that girls learn specific gestures, postures and movements, that is totally different from that of boys. An example, girls make delicate, restrained movements such as crossing the legs and folding the arms. In contrast, boys should make vigorous movements and a greater use of space which are socially coded as masculine. Society has really stressed that girls are not supposed to be big, strong and powerful, and that boys should not be weak, petite and play with such things as dolls or girly items. Most fathers do not want their boys to play with dolls because they feel that boys should participate in socially prescribed activities for boys: aggressive, competitive, territorial, strength-focused team sports that involve a great deal of body contact.
             Another reason dads do not want their little boys to play with dolls is the confusion of gender role in society. The dads in today's society feel that boys must make a dramatic physical transformation that occurs during puberty, which is enhanced by dramatic social changes.
