At the very beginning, Mussolini began to divide young fascists into armed groups or squads to defend the fascist rallies. Their purpose increased from defending fascist rallies to attacking of rival political factions, his old 'colleagues¡, the socialists. During his speeches and rallies, he hoped to seize and gain the initiative of the socialists.
