Outreach made me reflect a lot this year. Due to the fact that I was so bored while I was cutting my vegetables, I thought about our current society a lot. As you have read previous to this conclusion, I discovered 2 things, and I came up with 2 conclusions for the future. The 2 things I discovered were the presence of racism and poverty in Montreal. Before moving here, I didn't think there would be racism, as I was told by many people that Montreal was full of different kinds of races. At school, at the mall, at clubs, at restaurants; racism takes place everywhere. I also figured that racism wasn't only between wealthy and the poor, but also between wealthy and wealthy, and poor and poor.
I didn't think there was that much poverty in Montreal. A lot of people are in debt. People I would talk to at Outreach would brag about having a car or a new sound system at home, but when you ask them where they got the money, well they'd simply answer that they don't have to pay anything until January 2003. (Can't wait to see what they're going to be doing next winter.) There's also a lack of use of these soup kitchens. Homeless people on the street weren't seen that much at "Chez Mes Amis".
For my 2 conclusions that I thought of for life, were that you must select a job, where the entourage is fun to work in, and to finish your studies. These 2 things are essential to being happy in the working industry when you're older.
I think community service is something everyone should do once in a while, to give back to the society. At "Chez Mes Amis" in N.D.G., I didn't always feel like what I was doing was being appreciated, but in the end, it does make a difference. Most of the vegetables which I cut where mixed into soup, and then either eaten by the people who came to eat at the restaurant, or to "Meals on Wheels". (Meals on Wheels is an organization organ
