             The Mango Tree is a "rites of passage" story. What methods has the director (Kevin Dobson) used to create this story?
             The Mango Tree directed by Kevin Dobson is a "rites of passage" movie. It is a movie that shows the journey a young boy by the name of Jamie takes to become a man, and the processes in between that are involved to make that change.
             In this movie there wee many characters that had an effect on Jamie which contributed to Jamie's change into a man. Jamie's Grandma had a significant role in Jamie's life, which in turn had a great effect on him. She was a strong humanitarian, showing this with her care for the professor, and although wealthy she is very kind and has strong opinions on things such as the war. Also because of her age she is very experienced and always offers Jamie advice and shows him the right paths to take in life. For example during Jamie's affair with Miss Pringle his Grandma advises that he should go after her but warns that it won't last due to there situations.
             The professor also had a great effect on Jamie, and although constantly drunk, I believe Jamie considered him as a role model because of his respect especially towards Jamie's Grandma.
             Preacher Jones also had an effect on Jamie. When Jamie saw the preacher on a killing ram-page, then also getting killed he said he had lost faith in God, and declares he is not a Christian and cannot believe in God. This event changed Jamie dramatically.
             Jamie's sadistic teacher Mr Wilkenshaw also had an effect on Jamie's journey. When hatch got caught skipping school by Mr Wilkenshaw he used strict discipline to punish him, this included a black board stick and when Jamie saw it was getting out of hand he stood up and tried to stop the fight, showing his maturity and acting like an adult.
