Entering a public forum: Problem of Illegal street racing

             A world of fast cars, modified engines, customized body kits, and the adrenaline pumped thrills of racing is a calling not only to hot-blooded young males but to young women as well. The craze about modified high-performance engines in cars for use in racing has been around for ages, but since the release of the movie Fast and the Furious and sequel 2Fast 2Furious, there has been a major increase in the sport of illegal street-racing. Illegal street-racing presents a major problem in our country. Besides the fact that illegal street-racing involves speeds usually in excess of 120 miles per hour down public roadways, hence breaking the speed limit laws, the number of fatalities and injuries cssaused by illegal street-racing has increased greatly each passing year. In an article from the New York Times, George Blumberg states that according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of deaths among 13 to 19-year-olds in the United States. In 2002 there were a reported 5,933 teenagers killed in motor vehicle accidents throughout the nation.
             In response to illegal street racing activities, police in many states have begun to pull over and ticket drivers solely for having illegally modified car parts in their vehicles. This means that any vehicle that is outfitted with a sport modified air filter/intake, racing suspension, straight exhaust, or any other performance modification that was not part of the cars "stock" parts list, can be pulled over. The reason for this is that the police believe that if they ticket drivers of such vehicles, it will discourage them from going on to race their cars risking even more tickets or even the loss of their drivers license.
