Most people know that in advertising you have to catch the attention of people in a few short seconds. The success of what you are selling depends on the effectiveness of your advertising. In only sixty seconds a good commercial can make you laugh, cry, or roll your eyes. What ever the company uses to get your attention usually makes an impact you won't forget; therefore, you won't forget their product. There are three main types of advertisements that can be seen daily.
The first type of advertisement is a dramatic ad. This type of ad touches a very soft spot in people and causes an emotional response. Dramatic ads are usually for the more serious things we have to deal wit in life and are somewhat rare. The companies behind dramatic ads seem to target people who are older then about twenty-five and are settled. They also target females more heavily then males because females tend to show more emotions. Some general examples of products these kinds of ads are used for are nursing homes, funeral homes, attorneys, security systems, insurance companies, and hospitals.
The second type is a comical ad. Comical ads are light, funny, and much more common. Ads like this take everyday things and make them humorous. The companies who use comical ads to catch potential customers don't target groups by age or sex. This is mainly because everyone, at any age, likes to laugh. Some products that use comical ads are cars, computers, stores, alcohol, food and many other items.
Lastly there are the iconic ads. Iconic ads are those ads that use a single person, animal, cartoon, or symbol. These are the most widely known and probably the most commonly used. They are usually funny or cute, but can be serious. They don't have specific target ages or sexes unless the product is specified for a certain age or sex. Some icons used in ads that are well known are Tony the tiger, the Geico Gecko, the Taco Bell
