While inside this group he becomes subordinate for a while until he breaks from the chains of being a puppet. Until this point of his life the narrator is subordinate until he can realize what is conspiring around him. By joining the Brotherhood, the narrator was given an opportunity to re-invent himself as a new person, a leader and a role model, someone to be notice and respected. As he gains fame and notoriety for his inspiring speeches, the narrator begins to take this new identity that has been given to him and make something of it.
