From this man alienates himself from himself, and acquires a fear of discovering his true identity (III, 24 & II, 41). When acting in accordance to a standard, seeking popularity or approval, man looses himself, his identity, and ultimately his way out of the existential dilemma. Life then becomes monotonous, patterned and materialistic (III, 50 & II, 39). Individualism creates many separate patterns that provide false identities and confine man to non-being. Non-being hides man from genuine relation to anything, as well as from the dilemma. Weakness of self keeps society convinced that Individualism is enough, and also holds true that individualism and participation are interdependent making individuals miserable without the whole of society (IV, 92-93).
