The chapter that I picked to write this paper on was the chapter called The Communitarian School. I picked this chapter because I think the school is a very important matter that needs to get taken care of.
             In the third chapter called The Communitarian School, Etzioni talks about a lot of problems that deal with the school. In the beginning he talks about how children come into the school with their characters under developed and without a firm commitment to values. He says the basic reason is that families have been dismembered or the parents are over worked or consumed by other concerns and ambitions. As a result the children tend to be poor students. If their lack of character and moral values are not attended to while at school, they will graduate to become bad workers and citizens.
             Another point he talks about is the child's character formation. He says that a child character is important to develop because how he is taught is how he is going to grow up. It is important to teach your child self-control so know when to stop doing what ever it is. If it is bad they will know enough to stop because it is not morally right. He says that self-control makes people more tolerant of those from different ethnic, racial, and political backgrounds. Such tolerance is a major foundation of demographic societies and polities.
             Lack of discipline is the number one problem in the schools today. Students are restless, impatient, disorderly, and disrespectful, where the rules and routines cannot be maintained, learning cannot be possible. Kids will follow discipline when there is authority around but as soon as they leave the kids will act up because no one is around to punishment them. This mean that's kids are only behaving because of fear of punishment when really they should behave because they know it's the right thing to do and avoid doing what is wrong.
