Love in the Tenants of Moonbloom

             Love, courage and illusion: Sugarman refers to these as the trinity of survival. All three are instrumental in the novel The Tenants of Moonbloom by Edward Lewis Wallant. The many unique characters in the novel depict these three aspects of survival in many ways, especially the first part of the trinity, love. The Tenants of Moonbloom contains love in many different forms. It depicts love of another person, love of the tangible, and love of the intangible.
             When people are in love with each other, we assume that it is only natural for them to be married. Betty Jacoby and Arnold disprove this notion. Betty and Arnold are an unmarried couple that love each other enough to base their relationship completely on lies. Of course each one knows the other is lying, but they never stop trying to hide their faults from each other. Betty tries to hide her elderly figure by keeping the lights dim in their apartment. As she puts it " 'Don't let them tell you about the ease of old age,' she said, the guile restored to her by the dimness. 'They say that old people aren't concerned about appearances. Oh, no, that's not true at all. We, Arnold and I, keep more things from each other than ever. It's hard to make you see. If he walked in like you did...'"(107). Arnold doesn't try to hide his appearance from Betty, but rather his unemployment. When explaining why he doesn't tell his partner that he lost his job Arnold replies, "Just a brief slack period at the place. I can always get a job; it's not that. Don't want her to think I couldn't go right out and get a job. You understand." (145). Though futile, Betty and Arnolds facades simply show how powerful their love for one another is.
