I have recently seen The Elephant Kingdom Imax movie. Since then I have had a very strong interest in elephants; mainly African ones. African elephants are the biggest specie of elephants. They have two finger like projections on the end of their trunk, the they use in battle.
African elephants are often known for their large ears, about 5 feet long each. These ears help to cool the elephant down. They also have massive sized feet that are fairly straight from top too bottom. The African elephant has five fingers on their front feet and three toes on his back feet. The elephant also has thick skin and sparse hair.
The African elephant is native to many parts in southern, central, and eastern Africa. The elephant has been hunted for it's ivory tusks to make medicine, this has caused the elephant to go onto the endangered species list. So in 1989 Africa banded any hunting on the elephants. Elephants roam in large packs so they often are fighting for food. They also often strip trees for their branches, bark, and roots.
Elephants bones lack marrow cavities; they are filled instead with a spongy material through which marrow is distributed. Their grinding teeth are large and high, and usually four teeth( excluding tusks), one on each side of the upper and lower jaws, are present in the mouth at one time. Elephants eat only plant material, as much as 230 kg. Per day. One or two young are born after a period of about 21 to 22months.
