This section of the film series focuses in on India and the many cultures within. Referring to it as " the empire of the spirit," the film certainly does show the wide array of spirituality in India. Their culture has been there for thousands and thousands of years, and I imagine that we cannot begin to understand what they believe and how they live. Spirituality is a big factor in how they live. Everything they do in their lives revolves around what they believe in, which in India happens to be largely Hindi.
             We know very little about the Indus Valley civilization, which is the first era of India. Archeological work is being done there now to find out more about their culture. The U.S. thrives at knowing the past because it had so many different cultures which all got along reasonably well. For some reason we cannot do that here. We want to know how they can live together as one and still have such a diverse atmosphere. Perhaps it had something to do with Ashoka, the king of the Maurya Empire, who after winning a battle felt so ashamed of the suffering he caused that he then sanctioned a nonviolence campaign and vowed to peacefully fulfill his future endeavors. That tradition has just withheld.
             The Komhala, a religious festival is held here every year. At least fifteen to twenty million people come to celebrate their religion. They all gather to bathe in the river Ganges. Imagine how many people that is, celebrating different religions, all peacefully. Has that come over time or has the peacefulness always been there. Perhaps the reason the west can't understand how they live is because they have different goals. They base their goals on inner life and religion; the west places their importance on money and power. In their eyes we are poor and they are rich with their strong sense of inner strength and firm grasp on religion, and that's all they need.
