In the short story "The Birthday Party" by Katherin Brush, a husband overreacts when his wife tries to surprise him with a birthday cake. The couple went out to dinner in a small restaurant to celebrate the husband's birthday. The wife decided to surprise the husband with a birthday cake, but the husband was and proceeded to hurt the wife's feelings. The inconsiderate, self-centered husband hurt the wife's feelings by showing his disapproval of the surprise she had planned for him.
             The wife had this surprise done for her husband out of kindness. In the story it reads "the wife beamed with shy pride over her little surprise." She had no bad intentions for the surprise and only hoped for her husband to enjoy what she had done for him. Also in the story it says, "She was still crying when I finally glanced over there again." She did not expect the reaction her husband had after the surprise.
             The husband overreacted on his wife and did not take her feelings into consideration. In the story it says, "Instead he was hotly embarrassed, and indignant at his wife for embarrassing him." He did not have to be angry with his wife, since she was only trying to make him happy. Also it reads, "him say something to her under his breath-some punishing thing, quick and curt and unkind." He did not have to hurt her feelings with his rude words.
             The husband hurt his wife's feelings from being inconsiderate and self-centered. The wife was only having this surprise for him to show kindness. Then the husband overreacted and did not think about how he would hurt her feelings with his actions.
