Piaget's concrete operational stage spans from the ages of 7 to 11 and during this period thought is more logical, flexible and organized. The concrete operational stage can be broken down into many different sublevels. Conservation, Hierarchical classification, seriation, and spatial reasoning. Conservation =The ability to pass conservation tasks provides clear evidence of operations-mental actions that obey logical rules. Children are capable of decentration they recognize that a change in one aspect is compensated for by a change in another aspect. They also demonstrate reversibility or the capacity to think through a series of steps and then mentally reverse direction, returning it to its starting point. Hierarchical which refers to children being more aware of classification of hierarchies and their ability to focus on categories at the same time. Also known as class inclusion problem. Seriation is the ability to order items along quantitative dimension such as length and width. How Piaget tested for this was to ask children to arrange sticks of different lengths from shortest to tallest. There are also a more challenging seriation problem that requires children to seriate mentally. This is known as transitive inference, Piaget showed children pairings of different colored sticks. They observed that stick A was longer than B and B is longer than C, but they had to make the mental inference that A was longer than C. He found that children did not do well in this until age 9 or 10.
Spatial Reasoning , Piaget found that school-aged children have more understanding of space and their ability to give directions. Children start to perform mental rotations in which they align the self's frame to match that of a person in a different orientation, and in that they are able to identify left and right.
