Stimulate Learning: The Constructivist Method

             The traditional classroom is a one person show. Sitting still in one place, listening to a teacher lecture is very rarely interesting. Students are expected to accept what the professor says to be true. This is memorization and not learning. The traditional approach to teaching leaves little room for independent thought or student initiated questions. It cannot be assumed that each person has come into the course with equivalent background knowledge. Nor can it be assumed that everyone learns at the same tempo. Traditional learning presumes both of these things. Constructivist teaching is the best way to teach the use of microcomputers and other curriculum, because of its hands-on approach, freedom to explore, and its creation of a challenge.
             The hands-on approach gets the students involved in their own learning. Being able to handle the material is more exciting, thus keeping them interested. This interest will spawn a more in-depth knowledge of the subject. Students understand best when skills are embedded in their memory naturally. When it comes to computers, what is taught how to use is most often forgotten. However, experimenting with the computer, or figuring out how to complete a task, helps the student find a way that is most productive for them. The student will also completely know, not just remember how to execute the same task at a later time.
             Each student is unique. Everyone learns at different licks and in diverse manners. Giving the student the opportunity to explore the material in the manner that they wish helps them to retain the information in their own way. Since each student is unique, each one has had different experiences. Learning and experiences go hand in hand. When given the ability to explore the material, the student can then relate those experiences to their own lives.
