The people were striving to be better than before. It may have required competing with others, but they were willing to do it. America was also inventing within itself. The majority of players and managers were among working class men ( James 19) They worked during the day, and played whenever there was spare time. As the game expanded, their craving for competition grew to be more than just their own little teams. Leagues were formed, and the amatuer baseball teams began traveling to various places to challenge their opponents skill.
             As a child starts learning to walk it encounters many falls which leave bumps and bruises. When a child feels stable and secure, a fall will undoubtedly occur. Similarly, America was starting to feel secure, but then the Civil War almost became the
             destruction of the United States. America chose to split on the issues of slavery. The North opposed, and the South was for slavery. Furthermore, leading to a very bloody violent war. During the Civil War baseball betrayed its nations want to fight. Instead, it crossed the line of the North versus the South.              "April 21, 1863. The parade ground has been a busy place for a week or so past, ball-playing having become a mania in camp. Officers an men forget, for a time, the differences in rank and indulge in the invigorating sport wit a school-boy's ardor"
