Korean Weddings

             Before the engagement, the Koreans would exchange the eight characters or four pillars. This will determine if the match is suitable. When this process is over, they will call for a local fortuneteller to see if the couple could live in harmony. The Korean call this Kung-hap. Afterwards, during the engagement, gifts would be delivered to the bride and groom the day before the wedding. Friends of the groom would then blacken their faces with dried squid ink and dress in costumes. They would then parade with a box filled with gifts or known as hahm. As they get closer to the brides house, they will chant, ¡°Hahm forsale, buy a hahm.¡± Her parents would rush out to greet the gift-bearers. These days, families would meet in a restaurant and bring many gifts. Korean American families can spend around $30,000 to $40,000 on gifts alone.
             The gown worn by the bride was once the gown of the noble class. The lime-green known as the wonsam and the hwarrot or known as the flower robe is decorated with flowers and butterflies. Underneath the gown, she wears a hanbok, which is a doll-like traditional dress of Korea. On her head is a black cap with gems. On her feet, she wears white socks and embroidered shoes. The make-up is simple except for three red circles, yomi konji, that are the sizes of a nickel. Those circles are traditionally made of red pepper, but now it¡¯s often drawn on. They are suppose to ward off evil spirits. The groom¡¯s faruotsu is also the dress of the nobility. It¡¯s made of dark green damask with symbols woven in gold. He wears a tall black cap made of silk. Traditional costumes can be rented in Korean shops starting around $150.00.
