Consumerism

             As American's, we are quite aware of the consumer world. Who would have ever thought there could be so many underlying messages in an ad that you just casually flip by in a magazine? Companies are out there in the world today trying to get your attention by commercials, billboards, magazines, etc. and each time getting more and more creative. They need to make the ads attractive, something to catch the potential consumer's attention. Once that has happened, they need to make their message short, yet interesting, something that would stick in the consumer's mind. In ads that you see in magazines, there are fun colors, beautiful people, big things, pretty pictures, and all of these characteristics are contraptions to catch the reader's attention. Companies have to be on their toes with America's changing attitudes to not only what catches our attention these days, but to how we interpret the environment as well.
             "The highway is just a suggestion". When you are sitting in your new Volkswagon Touareg you are no longer just restricted to driving on the road, but now you can go wherever you want. This is what a typical consumer might quickly pick up when they are flipping through their magazine and pass this ad. The ad could catch their attention because of how different this page would look next to another in the magazine; a road in the middle of a vast open desert-like area with huge mountains in the background, with the car in the foreground driving off. Once the ad has caught the readers' attention, they may notice something else, in a way making the ad a bit comedic. This ad has its car driving on the road, but right ahead, there is a penciled in road leading away from the pavement and into the mountains. This is suggesting to the reader that you can explore, go "off the beaten track" and let the car take you where you want to go. This ad makes the car seem like nothing ...
