Dante's Inferno is a portrayal of Hell, step by step, circle by circle. Dante's Inferno starts out as a dark night in the woods when Dante was 35 years old. The next day is Good Friday. Dante finds himself lost, and is approached by a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf, slowing his progress up the hill he traveling. Dante then meets Virgil, a noble pagan to serve as his guide through Inferno to help him. Beatrice, loved by Dante, was the one who requested Virgil to help Dante. They reach a gate in the evening of Hell where people would not commit to God and proceed into First Circle beyond the River Acheron, guarded by Charon. It is populated by the unbaptized such as the pre-christian pagans. Minos, a beast in hell, is the judge that send sinners to their final destinations beyond the First Circle. The Second Circle contains the lustful. The Third Circle is for gluttons. The Fourth Circle is for spenders & hoarders. The Fifth Circle is for the wrathful and sullen. The Sixth Circle is for heretics. The Seventh Circle is broken into three rings. The first ring is for violence towards others. The second ring is for violence towards self. The third ring is for violence towards God. The Eighth Cirlce is for people that commit sins of fraud. It has ten different pouches for different types of sinners: seducers and panderers, flatterers, simoniacs, diviners, barrators, hypocrites, thieves, false counselors, schismatics, and falsifiers. The Ninth Circle is for sins of betrayal, and it is also called the Pit. Satan's waist is at the exact center of the earth. Virgil then leads Dante past Satan, which begins their ascend into the southern hemisphere. The only land left in the southern hemisphere is Mt. Purgatoria, his next destination. The journey into Hell and the departure from Hell lasted about two days.
