able to succeed and be successful in what they do. Although during the eighties, when this play was written, it was believed by popular society that a working woman/family was possible it soon became obvious that this ideal was not possible. Women were having significant problems dealing with the stress of assuming dual roles. In Top Girls, Marlene exemplifies this stress and confusion in her dealings with her daughter, sister and men which almost contradicts Churchill's motives for writing. Therefore I do believe that gender is going to play a significant role in presenting the different themes as Churchill is going to want to present her ideas in a pro-female fashion, clearing indicating that women should be accepted into the gender-fixed society and are not only able to survive in this world but also able to compete for gender equality.
