Scarlet Letter

The novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne has many different symbols, literary devices and themes. The main theme that Hawthorn relates everything to is sin. He relates sin to mainly four characters, Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth, and Pearl. The Scarlet Letter is the main symbol in the story that represents sin. First off, Hester, one of the main characters which carries The Scarlet Letter. Pearl, the daughter of Hester is mainly just the "outcome" of what happened with Hester. Next Arthur Dimmesdale is other main character who also carries the Scarlet Letter. Roger Chillingworth is the dreadful man in the novel; he plans many ways to harm Dimmesdale.
To the townspeople, Hester is a symbol of sin. They think this because she committed adultery, at their time that was not very common and considered incredibly sinful. In the book the governor asked Dimmesdale "Must it be thou or I that shall deal with this poor sinner's soul?" That proves that the governor believes Hester is sinner. Hester is not only an adulteress but she was also disloyal to her husband.
Arthur Dimmesdale himself as a reverend should have known not to commit such a sin. He was the man Hester had committed sin with and conceived Pearl. He should not be a reverend because he disobeyed two of the Ten Commandments. The commandment he disobeyed was, "Thou shalt not commit adultery." The other commandment he disobeyed was "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife." Being so "religious" and all the people which go to him for advice he shouldn't deserver the chance to give it to others because he is also a sinner.
Roger Chillingworth tried to harm Dimmesdale by using his practice of medicine and lying to him. The main sin which Chillingworth commits is revenge because Hester and Dimmesdale had an affair. Chillingworth didn't accomplish other doings of evil.
