Chee's Daughter

             In almost any story, the setting helps create a distinctive atmosphere and mood, which is conveyed to the reader. This characteristic is very apparent in the short story Chee's Daughter, by Juanita Platero, and Siyowin Miller. The story is about a Navajo named Chee, whose daughter is taken by his father-in-law, the greedy and selfish Old Man Fat. In the story, there are detailed settings that help to create a mood for Chee, as well as Old Man Fat. In Chee's Daughter there are many differences between the two settings, which allows for a completely different atmosphere for both Chee and Old Man Fat. The differences include the "time ambiences" that are created, distinguishing classic and modern, and the moods that are evoked from each of these settings.
             The first difference is the distinctly different "time ambience" for both Chee and Old Man Fat. Chee lives in a "wide place in the canyon-levels of jagged rock and levels of rich red earth." (75-76) However, Old Man Fat owns a trading store "with red gas pumps in front, and a sign across the tar-paper roofs: Red Sands Trading Post-Groceries Gasoline Cold Drinks Sandwiches Indian Curios." (78) This shows the distinct differences between the atmospheres of Chee and Old Man Fat. Chee seems to keep a traditional Native American style of living, being concerned about tradition and the good of others, while Old Man Fat is quite selfish, and is out to make money for himself.
             Finally, each of these settings have very different moods evoked. Chee's setting brings up more pleasant moods, while that of Old Man Fat is more depressing. Chee's setting is described as "a warm winter day, when the touch of the sun upon the back belied the snow high on distant mountains...This was home to Chee...as it had been to many generations before him," (75-76) hence creating a calm and serene mood for Chee.
