Hamlet

             Shakespeare's Hamlet is a well-known tragedy. Throughout the play, Hamlet is confused about what he's supposed to know, what actions to take, and who to be. I will be explaining this in further detail and in order to do this, I will make reference to the three different productions of the play we watched in class. First, I will go through the five acts and explain how Hamlet is troubled by what to believe, how to act and who to be in each of the five acts. Then, I will explain how the three productions shown in class helped the understanding of the play and how they interpreted the text.
             In the first act, we are introduced to the main characters in Hamlet. In this act, Hamlet is not sure wether or not what he saw was real. By this I am referring to the ghost of his father. Hamlet is also confused about what to believe here because he's not sure if he should be believing a ghost. The ghost talks to him in this act and tells him that Hamlet's uncle killed him and to get revenge. The ghost also tells him to leave his mom, Gertrude, alone. Hamlet was planning on just going to school but ends up staying after being convinced by Claudius and Gertrude. He sees that his mother is grieving pretty quickly since she's remarried so fast to Hamlet's uncle and isn't sure how to take this information in. He doesn't know whether or not to believe his mother was also in on the murder of Hamlet's father. So now Hamlet isn't really sure what to do. He is debating wether or not to kill the King, his uncle, in order to get the revenge his father (ghost) told him to get. Hamlet also wonders if he should, instead, come up with a plan to prove that Claudius (King) killed his father. He decides that he's going to fake that he's crazy and therefore cause a distraction, allowing him to spy more on his mother and Claudius.
