How are your dreams? Do your dreams consist of haunted houses, or are they based on the things that make you happy? Many people have different types of dreams, whether they are good or bad. Wallace Stevens claims that sailors are the ones scattered throughout society who dream of these things. The author implies that dreams are crazy and they might make you see different things.
             I think the poet is noting how unsatisfying life can seem at 10 o'clock at night, when all that is left of the day for respectable people is to go to sleep. So I feel that this poem is about a dream that Wallace Stevens had. The only part of excitement is the dream of a drunken sailor, who is "free" to let imagination take over. I would agree that Stevens imagines himself to be that drunken sailor. Stevens' poem displays his weariness of society's dull approach to life. When he begins talking about how, the houses are haunted by white night-gowns. None are green, or purple with green rings, he is complaining about how people in society dream of normal un-imaginative things. By saying that the house was haunted by white night-gowns, I think he is implying that he was going to bed at that time. He talks about how the night-gowns are decorated nicely with little pieces of jewelry.
             When he speaks of people with socks of lace and beaded ceintures, he is describing the physical appearance of normal dull people. He says that none of them are strange for back then, they are common in that time period. He says that people do not dream about nice things like flowers and monkeys. These people are the ones who dream of boring black and white images. He contrasts this with the sailor's shabby appearance, drunk and asleep in his boots, but also dreaming of catching, tigers in red weather.
